Salt Lake Comic Con 2014 report

ComicCon1

It’s been over a year since I’ve updated the blog, but I certainly haven’t been idle. I’ve been plugging away at Cooties, and, since Salt Lake City finally has an official twice-yearly Comic Con (two blocks from where I work, no less), I finally decided to get down to business and get a print edition put together. Cooties issue #1 debuted at Salt Lake Comic Con on September 4th, and is now up for sale on Indyplanet!

I shared a table with fellow indie comicker Mark Harmon, and I met my goal of breaking even. I learned a ton about tabling in Artist Alley; foremost, people visiting AA are more interested in buying original art of their favorite characters from creators than they are in independent comics they’ve never heard of. I made a lot more money drawing commissions than I did with Cooties. Something to think about for next time.

Anyway, here are shots of some of the commissions I did:

1 – Rocket & Groot!
ComicCon2
2 – TMNT Mikey
ComicCon3
3- Daryl and Rick from The Walking Dead
ComicCon4
4 – Some video game characters I’d never heard of
ComicCon5
5 – 50’s greaser Batman!
ComicCon6
6 – Steampunk Ron Swanson
ComicCon7
7 – Ronan the Accuser from GotG (How it REALLY should have ended)
ComicCon8
To sum up, I had a blast, and even let my sons have some time selling their drawings at my table (I would have killed for that at their age). I met a lot of great people, and am looking forward to my next opportunity to table again next year!

Dark White – a SpiderForest comic

The SpiderForest comic of the week is Dark White by Lillian Aguilar:

Dark White is a webcomic which takes the reader to Faya,  where gods and creatures from our own mythology interact. All cultures have their own creation myths. Faya is no different. They believe that in the beginning of their world it was a true paradise. But it did not last.  The gods went to war for leadership of the world. This period of time, known as The God’s War, brought disorder and chaos into the new world. The war went on for aeons and the people of Faya suffered for it. Our story takes place long after The God’s War, which took place in the early days of Faya.  This is the story of “The Second God’s War” and those who attempt to stop it.

Frozen art

We went to see Frozen over the weekend, and I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It’s very Disney-princessy, so my 8-year old daughter loved the heck out of it. I thought it was beautifully done, and I liked how the story flipped the traditional fairy-tale ending on its head. And holy wow, Idina Menzel is such a great singer. She made the musical numbers in this movie very easy on the ears.

Anyway, here’s a little bit of fan art I sketched out on my iPad yesterday. It’s the main characters, Elsa & Anna, as kids. I want to see the prequel movie with more of their adorableness, and how Elsa got her powers. Or we could go with the sequel, when Elsa is recruited by Charles Xavier to attend his school for gifted youngsters…

The Sundown Boys

This week’s SpiderForest comic is The Sundown Boys by Emma Pillette:

“The Sundown Boys is an original webcomic set in an alternate, dystopian future where cities, states, and even countries have succumbed to the richest and most dangerous criminal organizations.  They make the rules and the world is a very dark place.  As a consequence of the current war between the DeSaule Organization from New York and Corporativo Tecnologías Militares Nuñez based out of Mexico, the streets of New York City, once bustling, lie barren.  Robert, Leon, and Geoffrey Heron work as soldiers and assassins for the DeSaule Organization.  Their younger brother Timothy, too young to fight and less skilled than his seemingly superhuman brothers, stays home.  Their futures seem bleak.  But everything changes after a chance encounter with a girl from Leon’s past.  Suddenly, the brothers find themselves swept up in a major conspiracy which will reveal not only a startling secret about the brothers’ abilities, but also long-kept secrets from within the DeSaule Organization itself.”
